Planning a wedding comes with built-in pressure. It can stress out both you and your partner in a way that makes you consider eloping.

When that stress hits, you’ve got a few options. One of the best ones is to find a way to make wedding planning fun again. To do that, think about the first dance.

The first dance should be a moment of both joy and relief for you and your intended. The planning is over, and now you can enjoy the party.

Read on for five classic first dance songs that will help you do that.

1. "I'll Stand By You" by The Pretenders

There are a lot of tear-jerking lines in this song from 1994. One of the biggest, though, might be “Nothing you confess could make me love you less.”

Everyone wants a partner who will see and accept every part of them. That doesn’t mean you won’t fight. But it does mean you’ll still love each other just as much at the end of the day.

2. "No One" by Alicia Keys

This ballad sold millions of copies back in 2007 when Alicia Keys was only 26 years old. But it’s not fair to dismiss this as a song about puppy love.

Sure, lines like “I don’t worry ’cause everything’s going to be all right,” sound awfully confident. But wedding songs should be confident.

The act of getting married is a leap of faith. You can’t know what the future holds. But this song lets guests know that are you sure about the person who is joining you on the journey.

3. "Oh, What a World" by Kacey Musgraves

It may seem weird to call a song released in 2018 a classic. But Kacey Musgraves wrote much of her last album after meeting her now-husband, and you can hear the sense of wonder on tunes like this one.

She told Entertainment Weekly,” My world just completely changed.” She expresses that feeling well with lines like “Tell me it’s not too good to be true.”

Plus, there’s a banjo. Any love song that can include a banjo without sounding corny gets bonus points.

4. "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes

A lot of newlyweds refer to their wedding as the “best day of my life.” There’s nothing wrong with that, but hopefully, you’ll have many more good days as a couple.

This song understands that love should be the beginning of a new life rather than a single day that you’ll never be able to outdo. It’s a quiet, thoughtful song that some couples have also used for the ceremony.

5. "At Last" by Etta James

This might be the most classic wedding dance song of all. Etta James’ version is actually a cover of a Glenn Miller song, but it quickly became the definitive version.

Most people don’t marry their very first loves. We experience frustration and heartbreak first. But the bad times make it all the more powerful when James sings about finally finding “a dream that I can call my own.”

Classic First Dance Songs That Melt Hearts

Most people only want to make one wedding plan, because they only intend to have one marriage. But that means figuring out how to plan a wedding can be confusing and overwhelming.

Identifying some classic first dance songs is a great way to alleviate some of those pre-wedding jitters. For more suggestions, check out our guide to hiring a wedding band.
